HOW TO GET TO GRONINGEN
Travelling by car
Although there is a parking garage accross the road wit facilities for over 500 cars, delegates are advised to travel to Groningen by public transport. Martiniplaza is only a five minutes trip by bus or taxi from the Central Station. But if you prefer to use your own means of transport ; From the South-West (Paris/Brussel/Antwerpen): Direction Amsterdam/Utrecht, A1/A27 to Almere, A6/A7 to Groningen. From the South-East (Köln/Zürich/Vienna): Direction Ruhrgebiet (Duisburg/Dortmund), A3/E35 to the German/Dutch border, A12 to Arnhem, A50 to Zwolle, A28 to Groningen. From the East and North (Kopenhagen/Berlin/Warschau): Direction Hamburg/Hannover/Bremen, from Bremen the A28/E22 to the German/Dutch border, A7 to Groningen. Travelling by air
Groningen airport Eelde is on a 10 minute drive from the Martini-Plaza and there is a direct airline connection by air from London City Airport via Schiphol (Amsterdam airport) to Groningen Airport Eelde through VLM Airlines. Information through http://www.gae.nl/ If you would like to travel from Schiphol(Amsterdam Airport) to Groningen via the train, then give particular attention to this text: There are trains leaving Schiphol for Groningen every 30 minutes. The train ride is about 2 hours 30 minutes. At the Schiphol airport, you can buy your train ticket right outside the arrival gate or ask for information at the helpdesk. The cost of a one-way ticket is € 27,90 Euro. From there you go directly to the train station one or two decks lower. Convenient intercity trains provide a direct link between Schiphol airport, the main cities of Holland and the city of Groningen. Groningen Central is the terminal station of this intercity line. Coming from Rotterdam, Utrecht, Schiphol or Amsterdam, there are trains every half hour that bring you directly to Groningen. Travelling in the City of Groningen is very easy by bus. Fares are paid by using the “Strippenkaart” that can be bought in post offices, supermarkets, tobacconists, bookshops, magazine shops, etc. A “Strippenkaart” with 15 “Strips” will cost you € 6,80. From the Main station to the Martini-Plaza, by bus nr. 6, it will take 2 strips, that will be stamped off by the bus driver. The bus station is right in front of the station. The number is on the front of the bus. By bus it will take you about 15 minutes from the Central Station to the Martini-Plaza, incl. walking to the bus and the walk from the stop to the main entrance of the Martini-Plaza. Taxi
Taxies are, when you are in front of the railway station , with your back to the railway station, to your left. Bicycle
Of course the best way to enjoy the City of Groningen is to do this on a bicycle. You can stop where ever you want, there are excellent, free lying cycle paths and, often, one can use a one-way street both ways on a bicycle. Bicycles are for hire near the Central Station. Taxis can be found also outside the Central Station. Taxis are recognizable by their blue number plates. The fare within the city borders of Groningen should not exceed € 20,00.
